Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake National Park is the home of the Americas deepest, cleanest, and (possibly), most beautiful lake which was formed as the result of a cataclysmic volcanic eruption of Mount Mazama that left a caldera nearly 600 m deep and 6 miles in diameter. You can explore on foot along the 33 mile Rim Drive or along 90 miles of other hiking trails and several cycling paths. There are trails to suit all ages and abilities, but the nature of the terrain means that most of the longer hikes are quite strenuous with significant changes in elevation.

Fishing is good in the park streams and no license is required, but you will need to work hard to land your catch from the lake as the only access to the fishing area is the fairly steep Cleetwood Trail (30-40 min) on the north of the lake. In summer you can go on ranger-narrated boat tours of the lake (no private watercraft are allowed in the park). Children can enroll in a Junior Ranger Program to earn a badge or patch and to stay overnight you can pitch your tent or park your RV in Mazama Campground or check into the Crater Lake Lodge or The Cabins at Mazama Village.

In winter you can enjoy cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing (rentals available on site) or snowmobiling in certain restricted areas.

Valley of the Rogue State Park

Valley of the Rogue State Park is situated along a three miles stretch of the Rogue River and is perfectly situated for exploring the many attractions of the Rogue River Valley. There are plenty of fun outdoor activities inside the park including walking trails, cycling, fishing, boating, picnicking and games. The campsite is open all year round and you can choose from a variety of campsites including over 95 sites with full electrical hook-up. If you enjoy fishing you can have hours of fun along 3 miles of river frontage, and there is also a wildlife viewing platform where non-fishers can enjoy observing the salmon and doing some bird watching. If you would like to do some hiking you can set off on the 1 mile Rivers Edge Trail or try the new 3½ mile paved trail that is suitable for hiking or cycling. You can get the kids to enroll in the Junior Ranger Program in summer, play volleyball or horseshoes or just relax in a beautiful natural environment.

If you would like to know more about the mining era in the district you can take a drive to Jacksonville or Golden, two former gold mining boom towns. For a change of scenery you can visit Crater Lake National Park, Oregon Caves National Monument and the TouVelle State Recreation Site to picnic, hike or swim.

Ecola State Park

Situated along a nine mile stretch of the magnificent Oregon Pacific coastline, between Seaside and Cannon Beach, Ecola State Park is a great day-use area for the whole family. Hikers can enjoy a network of trails which include an 8 mile segment of the famous Oregon Coast Trail and a shorter (2½ mile) interpretive historical route called the Clatsop Loop Trail. There are several places where you can stop for a picnic and admire the beautiful sea vistas. Indian Beach is a quiet and secluded beach to soak up some sun, swim or do some surfing, and children can spend hours exploring the many tidal pools and observing the many forms of aquatic life they contain.

The park is home to a variety of wildlife and you can be on the lookout for elk, deer and soaring eagles as you make your way along the scenic trails. From Ecola Point you can access a trail which leads to a boardwalk there you can view some of the many sea birds that come to nest on Sea Lion Rocks. If you visit during spring and winter you may spot a few migrating grey whales. As you follow the trails you will see the remains of the now-abandoned Tillamook Rock Lighthouse - to find out more about this extremely hard-to-reach edifice you can visit the Cannon Beach History Center and Museum.
